Great Crested Flycatchers

Great Crested Flycatchers nest in natural cavities of snags in woodlands, deciduous forests, orchards, and parks. In courtship, the male repeatedly dashes after the female and hovers close to the hole where the female retreats. The Monticello nest cavity is somewhat less than 20 ft high, a little closer to the ground than is typical, but affording great views for observers. Nest construction began on May 25. Lots of leaves have been brought in. Both sexes construct the nest, but it appears that the bird with the nest material is accompanied to the nest by its mate who then continues in flight.
