Headcook in her makeshift kitchen - 2003 Huanchaco festival.

The week-long Huanchaco festival, held during October of each year, celebrates and honors
fertility, the coming rains, and growing season. Loud music ... vendors selling everything from
children's toys to household goods ... plywood-and-plastic makeshift "restaurants" ... truckloads
of sugar cane (young and old alike carry a stalk to eat as candy) ... plastic softdrink bottles
filled with "chicha" (cloudy alcoholic home brew) ... and fireworks ... these are all Huanchaco.
Birth rates invariably spike in July.

Here at this booth, it appeared as though pork would be on the day's menu, along with simmering
caldo and potatoes.
