Cumbemayo, located ~20km west of Cajamarca, Perú, is a spectacular area of haunting rock formations and broad sweeping vistas across the high grasslands. The site is best known for the 6-mile-long irrigation canal carved into the volcanic landscape more than 2,000 years ago by a pre-Incan civilization. The canal was used to divert water across the continental divide from the Pacific to the Atlantic watersheds. Petroglyphs are carved into the rock walls of the waterway, and 90-degree bends are believed to have been constructed to slow the water flow.
