I went to Wade from 1967-70. I lived in the building directly across from Wade on the corner of Mt. Hope Place and Walton Avenue in the double gray building. The building was demolished many years ago and is now the site of a small elementary school. Across from the school on 176th St were several stores frequented by students....Joe's pizzeria, the candy store (Eddie's Nut house, a small kosher deli, Bernstein's pharmacy, a small Zarro's bakery, Mitzner's kosher butcher shop (whose daughter attended Wade at this time, also) and a small Pioneer supermarket. After school, I would go home, change clothes and return with friends to the school where ping pong tables were set up; in the spring, we would play handball in the school yard on the 176th Street side. Wade had the best teachers....Mr. Bill Gorin (Science), Mrs. Sheila Alfano (Social Studies), Mr.Steve Wasserman (Social Studies), Mrs. Coyle (Science), Mrs.Springer (Home Economics...cooking and sewing),Mrs. Stein (English), Miss Nancy Mintz (English) and Mr. William Dunne(English) who became the Interim Acting Principal during the '69-'70 school year, just name a few. My best memories are those of the great teachers at Wade.

I lived on 178th st between Ryer and Anthony Aves. The kids on the north side of 178th at that point went to JHS 79, Creston JHS,( boys), and to JHS 115 Elizabeth Barrett Browning JHS known as E-B-B ( Everything but Boys) But my friends on the South side of the same
street went to JHS 117, Wade., which some of us envied because it was Co-Ed. A guest above mentioned that Lee Harvey Oswald spent a short time at Wade JHS probably in the early 1950s. Wade school yard had a softball field we liked to play at. But the field was configured so that the left field fence was a long long way, but the right field wall, a side of the building itself, was just a few strides past first base. In one of the very memorable moments of our neighborhood history, our 'hood being Echo Park, and the Echo Place and the 178th st environs, a guy raced to first to beat out a hit and tripped over the first baseman and stumbled into the wall! He broke both his wrists and had to have someone write his answers to the regents exam he took a week later, while he was in casts, A funny almost little rascals Hollywood moment was part of the event because when the ambulance took off for the hospital the rear doors flew open and our friend ALMOST rolled out onto the pavement. You can picture him lying there with two broken wrists up in the air rolling down 176th st toward Jerome Ave on a gurney.!! .

When I went to Wade ,Willaim Dunn was the Principal 69-70.I remember eddie's Nut House,Joe's Pizzeria and the Pharmacy diagonally across from Wade. Used to be outside basketball courts when I attended the school. The "U" was a perfect place for stickball.I lived on Mt Hope Place back in the day and also went to PS 28. Chess was my game and spent many mornings playing chess on mr Marshall's car.

I went to Wade and came their by bus on the Grand Concourse, and sometimes by trin the L from 170th st. to 176th st. (Yes bus pass-train pass)Started 7th grade in 1958 and graduated 9th grade in 1961. Yearbook saying when I graduated 6th grade from PS 64 was,"Roses are red pickles are green good luck in 117." I remember Eddie's candy store where they sold candy and ice cream. There was a juke box where we listed and danced to Rokin Robin. There was a deli where you could by a hot dog that was two stores down from Eddie's Across the street was a Deitch Supermarket where you could get a bologna with pot salad on a bialey for 30 cents. We were in those days alowed out for lunch. I remember the Library teacher who had a ruff reputation her name was Miss Turner. Before you got to Wade you had to be petrified that you would get her. I also remember being told that you should never go to the fifth floor to the swimming pool as there was no pool, nor a fifth floor. All new freshman were to be aware of this!

Wow the memories. I lived on Walton Ave & Mt Eden since I was 7. Went to PS 64 on 170th Street then to Wade JHS from 1971 - 1973 when I graduated. Finally, off to Wm H. Taft HS and graduated in 1976. Spent a lot of time hanging with my friends who lived in the Lewis Morris building - mostly by the steps on the Walton Ave side. I remember the theater on Mt. Eden I believe it was called "The Surrey". Two movies for $1.00. I remember visiting relatives on Davidson Ave the building next to the long steps that led you to Jerome Avenue. Then there was Carvel on 170th St., Terri Ann clothing store which was my first job. I can go on and on. THANKS FOR THE MEMORIES

I think that Ms. Joyce won. She attended Wade from 1851 to 1953. She won hands down (Smile) You go Girl.

Thanks for this picture-and all the others. I went to Wade, I think it was 1851-1953. Max Shoenberg was principal. Then on to Taft. Seeing this picture gave me a bunch of flashbacks; friends, teachers, the school yard, lunch time, sometimes walking home with friends going in the same direction (south) and sometimes taking the bus thanks to bus passes.
I, too, was born in Dr. Leff's Maternity Hospital.

I am so glad that you took those pictures. I went to wade also, for two years. I had a great time. I believe the year was 73 and 74. I met one of my best friends at wade, who I lost track of, and haven't found her at all. I also met my first boyfriend there. I left there and went on to Taft high school. I was on line trying to get pictues of my elementry school, and ran across your site. I thank you so much for the memories.

I went to Wade from September 1952 to June 1955. I think Oswald may have been there for a few months around this time. I also remember the bagel guy on the corner of 176th street and Morris. I was able to walk home for lunch and sometimes bought a bagel when I returned for afternoon classes.
Guest 11-Jan-2009 03:10
Yes, PS 117 Wade JHS is at the corner of 176th Street and Morris Avenue. I recall afer school looking forward to seeing the bagel man (soft salty pretzels) and for 4 or 6 cents getting a nice big one. The school is between 176th St and Mt. Hope place (Morris and Walton). Doctor Leffs Hospital (many babies born here, including me) is on the corner of the GC and 176th street (the building is gone and now a retail store and office two story building). Further, the street by 175th-176th and Walton is booming with new high rise apartment buildings and a community center... like 5 new buildings (some will be finished in the next few months, 1/09). Also, there is a small public school across from Wade on Walton as well. FYI, I heard that Lee Harvey Oswald went to wade for a short time??? and was known to be a trouble maker.. way back when?
Guest 23-Nov-2008 00:31
wow... I went to Joseph H. Wade JHS 117 from 1968 to 1971 (yes, I repeated the 7th grade)
