These mailboxes might be convenient for tenants today, but they surely were not there when I lived there! This thing is kind of an eyesore! :/

That's correct. The mailboxes were adjacent to the stairs to the upper floors

Yes, this ugly mess was not there when I lived in the building either. I recall there being several heavy carved benches in that hallway. I think one was right where the mailbox bunker sits, and another across from it.

Front of lobby and there were no mailboxes when I was a kid living in this building.
