Purple Fringe is not Blooming

These galleries demonstrate that the purple fringing phenomenon often seen with digital cameras is caused by the lens and not by blooming, as some have suggested. Note, for example, that at the same shutter speed and aperture at which the 28-80 II causes purple fringing, the 28-70L does not. Since the sensor gets the same amount (and rate) of light in both cases, the fringing cannot be caused by sensor blooming.

All shots were taken with a Canon EOS D60 with no filters on the lens. Each sequence is a result of different manually selected focus points. All lenses were used at a focal length of 50mm.

Update: D30 samples with 28-80 II added.
