Goodyear GA-466 Inflatoplane

Yes this is an inflatable plane. It was used in WWII to drop out of a plane so a soldier/pilot could fly it out of a bind to safety. A scuba tank was used to inflate the thing that came down in a box. When flown it was said to be able to withstand "two bullet holes" and fly due to a inflating system but a third hole would "bring her down". Jim stated that when he does fly it, he won't be going any higher than it is hanging from the ceiling.

The Inflatoplane was an experimental aircraft built by Goodyear Aircraft in the late 50's. the idea was to drop it to a downed pilot so he could fly to safety. there were problems with the concept and a fatal crash of one. With the advent of the helicopter in front line service, the need never developed.

Interesting concept.
