Creeping Cucumber * Melothria pendula

Does anyone know what this is?
Is the fruit edible? My dogs eat the berries like they are cheese!
It is growing in Williamsburg, Virginia.
It grows in partial sun/shade where it is, climbs and comes back from seed every year.
Fruit is almost black when fully mature.
