electric generator - quiet muffler

When the remnants of hurricane Ike blew through Ohio in Sept. 2008, we were without power for 4-1/2 days. We have Coleman PowerMate 4500 W. generator that is used power the house, - but it is extremely loud. The original exhaust suppression was a cheap spark arrester, and it does virtually nothing. After 4 days of noise, my head was buzzing with exhaust pulses. A Google search showed me how others handled this problem. There is no original thinking here - except perhaps the starting system.

The pipe flange (sand or gravel cast) that connects the muffler with the pipe needed to be faced off in the lathe, as it was too rough to seal anything. A thick exhaust gasket should work though.

The muffler (Suzuki 600 cc) was bought on ebay for $36.00, the hangers at Advanced Auto parts, and the "black" pipe at an Ace Hardware store. I have about $75.00 in it.

So the exhaust noise is gone, but the engine itself is pretty noisy. But at least it is not a exhaust pulsing type noise. So overall, I'm very satisfied with the effort. This thing aggravated me from day one, and it is about 12 years old.

Hope this helps someone else. Packrat1947
