Thomas Pendergast was a wealthy Kansas City businessman who also ran Kansas City's political machine. It was through his influence that Harry Truman achieved political success. When Truman first went to the US Senate, he was known as "The Senator from Pendergast." Pendergast was eventually jailed for fraud. Many demonized him, but even today, he is recognized for making great contributions to the economic success of the city where he lived.
