A businessman and philanthropist, he was a bachelor and a multi-millionaire. At age 52 he married, stating that he'd put $1 million in his wifes name, and he intended to give away the rest of his fortune. From then until his death, he did just that, often anonymously. Among other things, he donated the land for the University of Kansas City, now the University of Missouri at Kansas City. Volker Road and Volker park were named in his honor. (Bio by Bill Walker)
