In early June of 2016, work began in earnest to build a new double track bridge structure to replace the former Milwaukee Roads S turn wooden trestle. The ByPass-ByPass project requires a double track bridge and a new passenger station and the trestle is nearing the end of its economic life.
Thus a new double track concrete bridge or viaduct is now under construction. A new single track bridge will be built to the south of the trestle, the trestle then will be removed and the second half of the bridge built roughly in its place.
In a nod to the historical nature of the trestle, Milwaukee Road signs will be part of the G street girder bridge crossing. The project is expected to be completed in late 2017 or early 2018.
