Advice for a newbie: Use a tripod or a monopod... especially in low light. A tripod will make your photos much sharper. And remember, you are the determining factor behind the images. Regardless of what camera you are using, you are the overriding factor to success - have patience, experiment and ask questions. I've seen superb shots taken with disposal cameras...yes, that's right. And I've seen horrible photos taken with the likes of the Nikon F5 - all due to the inexperience of the photographer.
