Thanks Tony, I live on Raritan bay so most of my shots were taken on Sandy Hook, along the bay and some in my back yard since I live on a small coastal lake.
No, I don’t have any shots of owls but I heard one the other day on Sandy Hook so maybe soon:-)

Very nice gallery! I especially like your action shots. As everyone here knows, photographing birds is the most difficult of subjects to photograph- and you do it very well! Whereabouts in New Jersey do you hail from? I've recently become addicted to photographing birds and my favorite sites are the Great Swamp, Brig, Barnegat Lighthouse and Sandy Hook. By the way, have you had the fortunate opportunity to photograph that elusive snowy owl?

Great Gallery! There were a couple shots that made me laugh out loud. My favorite is the yellow crowned night heron doing his balancing act with alot of concentration. I enjoyed the trip! Thanks. Lynne

Hi Steve,
The 500 is mighty big, long and heavy and I wonder if it would get in the way of getting good action shots where you need to follow the subject or point and click almost instantly before the subject flies away? Part of the fun in wild life photography is getting close to your subject and I’m not sure if I could crawl through the thick brush, swamps or woods with the BIG 500? Anyway, I love my 100-400 and I don’t see myself spending the money on the BIG ONE any time soon.

It all depends on the size of your wallet. All pictures on this forum were taken with Canon 20D and 100-400 canon lens, which would do just fine with the 100’shot you’re looking for. There are better lenses and cameras however, which will give you more detail on a long shots but the prices are steep. If I was you I would wait until I learn more in school of what I really need, before buying anything.

i am giong to college in the fall for photography, i hope to be a nature photographer, any advice on which camera to get for college and ways to get the shot that seems impossible- for instance an mating pare of osprey 100 feet in the air on a telephone pole?

Thanks Hugh. Is it ease? I don’t think its hard but it takes some time and some experience to get close enough for a good shot without spooking your subject.

Guy, the splash shots are relatively easy and require only little practice. The difficult pictures are the actual dives like in Dive2, which frankly require more luck than skill.

You've got some nice work here. I like the action you've captured with your Tern shots. From my limited experience trying to shoot them, I've found them to be difficult to capture.
