Mahabalipuram was a flourishing port town of the Pallava rulers of south India. In ancient times, as now, fishermen were of quite low Sudra caste. Although the Indian law prescribe monogamie some fishermen are secretly married twice as an old practical tradition: when a fisherman died at sea the widow was sheltered by the man of her married sister as widows are not marriageable anymore.
