How to use PBase (for Olympus E-SLR Galleries)

How To Use PBase

(I would like to acknowledge the hard work of JDU & Klaudio over at kMTF for the templates that this environment is built on) OK - These instructions tell you how to use PBase to access and manage the Olympus E-SLR Galleries and images. There are even instructions on how to display PBase images in PBase gallery headers, image caption fields and image comments fields, and even in dpreview messages. Much of the information can also be applied to other PBase galleries and images outside the Olympus E-SLR Galleries. Also see PBase help at PBase.com.

Select what you want to do:

Logged in or out:

if you are logged in, 'help logout home' will appear at the top right of the page ( login procedure here)
some things you will be able to do when you are logged in:

you will be able to edit galleries and images, including adding images and text, changing text and replacing images
you will be able to see how many times each gallery or image has been viewed
to check your current login name, select 'home' at the top right of the page, read the 'Name' field, then use your browser's 'back' button to return to the gallery or image you were looking at
to log out, select 'logout', then 'display all galleries' to go to the Olympus DSLR Galleries main page, or use your browser's back button (and refresh) to display the page you just came from

some things that will not happen when you are logged in:

you will not be asked for a name for comments; your name will be 'Olympus E-SLR Users' (if you logged into the OLY_foto_review account) and you will have to provide your name in the comments text (if logged out of all accounts, you will be able to enter your name and/or e-mail address to appear as the name against the comments)
your visits to each gallery or image will not count towards the number of views of that gallery or image (if you are logged out, visits will be counted as views)

PBase will remember your login state between sessions, so make sure you are in the login state you want to be in after you enter PBase

Logging in:

if you are not logged in to the account, 'edit this gallery' or 'edit root gallery' will not appear in the second top line of the page

to log in, select 'login' at the top right of the page if you are not already at the login page (or 'logout' if you are logged into a different account)
enter these login details: login name 'OLY_foto_review'; password 'kickass'
select the 'login' button

it can sometimes take more than one attempt to log in, so try again if it doesn't work the first time

select 'all galleries' near the top of the page to take you to the Olympus DSLR Galleries main page, or
use your browser's back button to take you back to the page where you were when you decided to log in
use your browser's refresh button to reflect the new login state

Browse the galleries:

you do not need to be logged in (but it is ok if you are; see about being logged in or out)
go to the Olympus DSLR Galleries at: www.pbase.com/OLY_foto_review; if you are reading these instructions, you are already in the Olympus DSLR Galleries
select the gallery you want to open by selecting its thumbnail, or
select 'tree view' at the top right of the page and select the gallery you want from the tree

from the tree view, you can return to the thumbnail view by selecting 'thumbnails' at the top right of the page

once you are 'in' a gallery (where you are viewing the thumbnails for the images in that gallery), to have a good look at an image and its associated information and comments, open the image by selecting its thumbnail
once the image is open, you can:

view the image at the size you prefer:

select small, medium, large or original (as available) from 'other sizes' below the image
when you select an image size, that same size will be used for displaying other images throughout PBase until you choose a different 'other size'

view any EXIF data (image data from the camera) by selecting 'full exif' under the image if it is not already displayed

if EXIF data is not displayed and 'full exif' is not displayed for selection, the image simply does not have any EXIF data (the exception is where PBase cannot read EXIF data for some images even if that data exists, although this is not common)
you can hide the EXIF data by selecting 'hide exif' under the image

view the comments people have made about the image at the bottom of the page and add your own comments

you can easily go to a higher level gallery by selecting its name from the top of the page

Comment on an image:

browse to an image and open it
once the image is open, you will see existing comments at the bottom of the page
you can add your own comments by selecting 'comment on this image' above existing comments or near the bottom of the page if there are no comments
if you are not logged in (the usual situation when you want to add comments), there will be fields to enter your name and/or e-mail address so that they appear with your comments

you should at least provide a name to show who is leaving the comments

if you are logged in, you will have to put your name in the comments text instead; comments are really intended for visitors, not the account users who will more likely be logged in
if you want to log out before proceeding, choose 'logout' at the top right of the page and navigate back to the page

if you use your browser's 'back' button to get back to the image page after you log out, you will need to use your browser's 'refresh' button when you return to the image page to change it to the selected login state (refresh also needed when changing from logged out to logged in for an image page)

type your comments in the 'Compose your message' field and select 'Post Message' to commit them
that will take you back to the page for the image you have been looking at and have just commented on
if you want to change the comments, you will need to be logged in and:

to delete them, choose 'delete' at the right beside the applicable comments
to edit your comments or reply to someone else's, choose 'edit comments' above the comments and follow your nose

Add a new image:

notes:

note that PBase creates different size thumbnails from your the image you upload, depending on the size of your uploaded image
if your uploaded image is say 800x600 pixels, PBase also creates a 'small' thumbnail that is 160 pixels wide and a 'medium' thumbnail that is 400 pixels wide; your original is 'original' size in the list of sizes under the image and EXIF data (if any)
if your uploaded image is bigger than 800 pixels on either side, PBase will still create the 'small' and 'medium' thumbnails, but it will also create a 'large' 'thumbnail' that is 800 pixels on the longer side; the problem is that PBase uses severe compression that will make the 800 pix 'large' version look pretty bad
as 'large' (rather than 'original') might be the default viewing size for many people, you might want to make sure you don't upload a picture that is bigger than 800 pix on either side; if you prefer to go ahead and upload a bigger image, it might be advisable to put a note in the caption something like 'Best viewed at 'original' size'

go to the Olympus DSLR Galleries at: www.pbase.com/OLY_foto_review; if you are reading these instructions, you are already in the Olympus DSLR Galleries
make sure you are logged in
browse to the gallery where you want to add an image (where you are viewing the thumbnails for all the images in that gallery)
scroll down to where it says 'Upload Photos to this Gallery'
select the 'Browse...' button
navigate to where the image is stored on your computer and select/open it
select the 'Upload Image' button
you will be returned to the gallery edit page
scroll down to the section 'Make changes to the images within this gallery'
find your image at the end of the list and select 'edit' in the commands column

if you select 'select representative', that image will become the gallery thumbnail

in the page that appears, change the text for the title, caption, artist, location (and more if desired, but it is mainly the EXIF data fields)
- you can use '<br>' in the title to force a line feed at that point when displaying the title
select 'Update Image' below that block of fields
you will be returned to that same page with the updated text intact
from there:

select 'view image' at the top left of the page if you want to confirm the changes and see the posted image, or
select 'thumbnails' at the top left of the page if you want to return to the gallery thumbnails view

you may want to continue to browse the galleries

Change an image (edit text, replace image, or change listing order):

go to the Olympus DSLR Galleries at: www.pbase.com/OLY_foto_review; if you are reading these instructions, you are already in the Olympus DSLR Galleries
make sure you are logged in
browse to the gallery where you want to edit an image (where you are viewing the thumbnails for all the images in that gallery)
either edit the image text or replace an image or change the order of images in a gallery

Edit the image text:

note:

(the text includes the title, caption, artist, location, date and a number of other fields)

select the image thumbnail to open the image page
choose 'edit image' at the top of the page
replace the caption text or other text as desired
select the 'Update Image' button at the end of that section
wait for the edit page to refresh
select 'thumbnails' at the top left of the page to return to the gallery thumbnails view

Replace an image:

note:

this procedure lets you replace the current image with a different one without losing the position in the gallery and without losing the title, caption, artist, location, date, etc or comments already entered; even the EXIF data from the original image will remain, even if there wasn't any
if you want to replace the current image without EXIF data with one that has EXIF data, delete the current image and add the image from scratch using a version that has EXIF data, making sure it has a different file name from the original image (PBase seems to have a long memory)

select the image thumbnail to open the image screen
choose 'edit image' at the top of the page
go to the bottom of the edit page
select the 'Browse...' button
navigate to where the image is stored on your computer and select/open it
select the 'Upload Image' button
wait for the edit screen to refresh before doing anything else or the update may not work
from there:

select 'view image' at the top left of the page if you want to see the posted image, or
select 'thumbnails' at the top left of the page if you want to return to the gallery thumbnails view

you may want to continue to browse the galleries

Change the order of images in a gallery:

select 'edit this gallery' at the top of the page
scroll down to the section 'Make changes to the images within this gallery'
change the numbers in the 'Sequence' column to the new sequence
select 'Update Image' below that block of fields
go back to the top of the page to choose where to go next, perhaps 'Display this Gallery'

Delete an image:

go to the Olympus DSLR Galleries at: www.pbase.com/OLY_foto_review; if you are reading these instructions, you are already in the Olympus DSLR Galleries
make sure you are logged in
browse to the gallery that contains the image you want to delete (where you are viewing the thumbnails for all the images in that gallery)
select 'edit gallery' at the top of the page
scroll down to the section 'Make changes to the images within this gallery'
find the image you want to delete in the list
select the box beside the image in the 'Select' column

make sure you have only selected the image you want to delete

scroll down to the section 'Remove or Delete Items from this Gallery'
select the 'Remove Selected Items' button and the selected image(s) will be deleted from the gallery
go back to the top of the page to choose where to go next, perhaps 'Display this Gallery'

Display/link PBase images in other parts of PBase and in dpreview messages:

notes:

you can display PBase images in a number of places other then where they exist in their PBase galleries where they were uploaded; they can also be displayed in:
- PBase gallery headers, image caption fields and image comments fields
- dpreview messages (and other sites that support the display of direct linked images)
consider using 'small' at 160 pix and 'medium' at 400 pix for image display size, as those sizes can often do a good job instead of using 'large' or 'original', which are often 800 pix and sometimes larger; for example, dpreview message spaces are 480 pix wide, so a 'medium' 400 pix image fits comfortably in that space

go to the Olympus DSLR Galleries at: www.pbase.com/OLY_foto_review; if you are reading these instructions, you are already in the Olympus DSLR Galleries
make sure you are logged in
browse to the gallery that contains the image you want to display elsewhere (where you are viewing the thumbnails for all the images in that gallery)
right click on the thumbnail for the image you want to display and choose 'Copy Shortcut' (this also works in the gallery edit screen)
- you now have the path to the image on your clipboard, including the essential 8 digit PBase image ID, ready to paste and use elsewhere

Display the image in other parts of PBase:

browse to the gallery where you want to show the thumbnail link
from there, either:
- gallery header: choose 'edit this gallery' and paste the shortcut into the PBase gallery header (description field), or
- image caption: view the image and edit the image text to paste the shortcut into the caption field, or
- image comment: view the image and comment on the image to paste the shortcut into the comment field
add '.jpg', '/small.jpg', '/medium.jpg', '/large.jpg' or '/original.jpg' to the end of the path for the image of that size to be displayed in its posted position; '.jpg' on its own will display the large version (or original version if there is no large version)
- example to display image (without quotes): "https://pbase.com/image/xxxxxxxx/medium.jpg"
if you leave off '.jpg', you instead provide a basic link that people can select to see the picture in PBase instead of in the message
- to follow link (without quotes): "https://pbase.com/image/xxxxxxxx"
- another example (without quotes): "https://pbase.com/image/xxxxxxxx/original"
note that for the image display or link to work in a PBase gallery description field or image caption field, there must be at least one character before the link on the same line (even a space will work); the last character before the link (on that same line) will not be visible; the link can be on its own on a line in a comments field

Display the image in dpreview messages:

Go to the dpreview KMTF threads and create a new message
paste the shortcut into the position in the message where you want the image to appear
add '.jpg', '/small.jpg', '/medium.jpg', '/large.jpg' or '/original.jpg' to the end of the path for that version to be displayed in your message during preview and when posted; '.jpg' on its own will display the large version (or original version if there is no large version)
- example to display image (without quotes): "https://pbase.com/image/xxxxxxxx/medium.jpg"
if you leave off '.jpg', you instead provide a basic link that people can click on to see the picture in PBase instead of in the message
- to follow link (without quotes): "https://pbase.com/image/xxxxxxxx"

Display a thumbnail link like those in PBase galleries:

to display a thumbnail link like those in PBase galleries, you can include the following code in a Pbase image caption or comment field (substitute your image ID for 'xxxxxxxx' in both places)

note that the <hr> code at the beginning and end displays a horizontal line at the top and bottom of your caption or comment field
make sure you replace 'write caption or comment text here' with your own caption or comment
tr defines a table row and td defines table data (a cell) within a row
to display additional thumbnails beside the first one, just repeat the '<td ...><a ...>...</td>' table data cell construct for the additional photo(s) after (below) the previous <td>, ie:

Display artist pic instead of name beneath image:

instead of having your name appear below your PBase pics, why not have your artist picture come up instead?
for the Olympus DSLR Users galleries, there's an 'Artist Pics' gallery ready for you to post your small artist picture and set up this catchy feature
you need to do this separately for each account where you want to use this feature by uploading your small artist picture to the galleries for each applicable account
