Thanks, folks, for all your encouragement - I sure appreciate it.

Shirley, this is a male hairy. The female was over on my suet feeder and I also took some shots of her. Some days, I get half a dozen of these birds in my yard near the house. We have some big trees - tamarack, pear - which they seem to love.

Brent, I posted the original shot - unedited except for a +2 sharpen - in my pBase nature album as BJ Tate. It's the last image on the page. So you can see that eye area as it looked straight out of the camera.

Awww, look at him warming in the sunshine! I'm trying to figure out if this is a Hairy Woodpecker or a Nut Hatch. Do you know? Regardless, its a very nice composition!

I like the composition too and a nice 3D look, thanks to fine DOF. Colors looks natural and I appreciate that. Nice details on the feathers, not to sharp, but this is a plus IMO.

The textures in the foreground work very well in separating the bird (and the intersting foreground branch) from the background. If you shoot RAW it would be worthwhile to go back and capture the feathers in the white to the left of the eye (or if you shoot JPG and have brightened the image). This kind of hilite is one of the hardest to capture (a small bit of the brightest white). brent

Nice one, I like the way a V shape is formed by the branch the bird is sitting on and the angle of its body, adds a real dynamic to the composition.
