What a cat! Good shot although I second Shirley's suggestion.

Shirley, I don't know much on the technical side and definitely appreciate your input. I had the 40-150 lens on the camera for the first time in some weeks (since I got the 70-300 and have been trying to master that, not always successfully). I'll revisit this and work on your suggestions, which make perfect sense now that I understand what is needed. My first reaction when I read the challenge theme was "Huh? What the heck is a shallow DOF?" I do have a ways to go. :)

Thanks to everyone for your wonderful comments!

So you have a collection of cats eh? There's something comforting about a cat. They are so great when you need a good cuddle! I love how he managed to lay down without knocking anything over! I love his nice extra toes paws too! My oh my, you would never see Milo in a place like that. He knocks everything down, all on purpose too!! It's a good photograph of him and one that will always make you remember something special about him.

Brenda, if I may make a suggestion...if you happen to have a longer focal length you might even get a more shallow DOF for your shot. Give it a try with just the chessmen if you like. If you were to use say 150mm or 200mm and get farther away from your subject and then use a f stop of around 3.5 or as low as you can, then it will really make a small point of 'in focus' area. If you already know all this stuff well...it is for anyone who might be listening :o) I don't speak in good techie language so it's a language all my own LOL

I suspect Gollum would love the attention he's getting, if he knew about it (thanks to all). Tom, he usually is very careful and knocks over only a few pieces - often only a couple, which then topple into another two or three. Few ever actually fall to the floor, though. They're molded resin, so they can't break - luckily. The board itself is an inlaid tabletop bought at a yard sale. He adopted it immediately upon its arrival.

Colin, he's figured out how much space his considerable girth takes up. He steps around behind the line of men (on the white side) and settles into position. As he has polydactyl forepaws, he has to either fold them as pictured, or dangle them over the edge. He has no tail, so that end doesn't dislodge the chessmen. He may be round, but he's also rather shortened.

How did the he get there without knocking the chess set flying! He seems to know exactly how far he can spread out and has a satisfied look on his face too.

Great capture Brenda, how often do you have to set the pieces back up?
