Italian Marble-Shirley
by Shirley Haden

"In 1895 a commission was appointed and some money appropriated to build a [new] capitol. Instead of carrying it down to the minimum, instead of doing what they thought they could afford, they had a vision of what the state of Minnesota was going to be, and that it should have a capitol worthy of the state that was to be. They built this magnificent Capitol building, complete with a wonderful dome and gold horses and Italian marble all over the place. What a vision! What a challenge! What an inspiration!"
—Elmer L Andersen Governor of Minnesota (1961-1963)

Thank you both. The capitol building is so full of neat stories and "eye candy" that I could fill an entire gallery from there with stories. I intend to do just that. I'm going to go back again (after all it is close by and free, it is the people's state house) and see if I can collect stories and write them down. I hear them, love them and then I'm afraid to write it down for fear I'll mess the story up.

I met a state representative roaming the halls last time I was there and he told me some fantastic stories about some marble pillars there and a couple of the large ceiling mural paintings. I remember them but maybe not acurately enough. This time I will take a pen and paper to jot notes right away!
