This Headstock is all that remains of old cola mine. It was renovated in 1989 and is a memorial to the 51 lives lost in the great mine disaster of the 28th Jun 1839. The mine closed for good in 1940. For many years it was and open shaft for ventilation and a possible escape route from other locally connected coal mines. All the coal mines in the Durham coal field are now closed.

I really like this too. What a great building that is. Is it used now days? I think it would make a fantastic home.

Surprising (to contemporary eyes) style in a utilitarian structure speaks to evolving esthetic.
