Gateshead Millenium bridge over the River Tyne
by Michael Ramsay

Designed by Wilkinson Eyre Architects / Gifford & Partners and built by Gateshead-based construction company - Harbour & General, the bridge was opened on Monday 20th November 2000. It is still the world's first and only tilting bridge! The unique design is based on the simple idea of a pair of steel arches - one is the deck, the other supports the deck. The whole bridge tilts, undergoing a metamorphous into a grand arch, in an operation that evokes the slow opening of a huge eye. People were amazed when this bridge first opened and I am sure in 100 years time they will still be in awe. Follow this link to see a timelapse video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S7nXXy1NhpM

Colin, I got the city right, but the sticky toffee pudding is at the Marquis of Granby. I was on a mission to find the best sticky toffee in Scotland and England and the Marquis of Granby won hands down! YUM

Oh Colin, I loved it up there around where Michael lives. We went all around. If you love sticky toffee pudding, you have to go to the Grand Marquis in, is it Gatehead Michael? He lives there I only visited for a month in 2003. I want to go back again. There are castles up there, and lots of train history and Beamish of course. You might have to meet Michael, I can vouche for him, he's a swell human being. :o)

Awww, a wise choice Michael. This is really nice and the bridge is a 21st century wonder! Also I can easily imagine someone having a good time looking at this years from now. I like your pp work too, it looks almost like an editorial shot for a magazine, or maybe a postcard.

Very cool! I enjoyed the time lapse - it was interesting to watch it tilt to allow the ships to go through - I do not know why it seems amusing to have the bridge automatically tilt and then to have manual doors open and close.

Its a really fine example of functional but elegant engineering. I must take a trip north of the M4 soon, there is so much I've never seen up t' north.
