2nd - My Mothers Hands Are Now My Own-Shirley
by Shirley Haden

My mother passed away from breast cancer 25 years ago this July. She was a bit younger than I am right now. I look at my hands and they are so like hers. The skin looks old, but it is as soft as it's ever been; just as I remember hers.

It's funny you should use that title as I was only thinking the other day that my hands are like my father's... Perhaps, as Brenda says, we all just come full circle.

Hmmmph. I often look at my hands and think of my dad's - mine are shaped like my ma's but work like my dad's. I wonder what he thought inside when sitting alone? I wish I could be as good as the nicest memories of my parents. Maybe that is what holy is.

Very well said Brenda, I envy your ability to express feelings so well. Perhaps a great trait you have passed on to your daughter and new grandson. You are so right about how we swear we're going to not be our mothers only to end up being very much the same.

What a fine tribute to your mother and her legacy. The hands become a symbol of the way we pass on many of our traits to our children, and they go on and on down the generations: hard work, compassion, attention to detail (the carefully-trimmed nails). And when we're young we try to make ourselves very different from our parents, only to come full circle later in life and realize that we have somehow transformed into them! Beautiful shot.

Don't be silly Brad, I loved your story about your Grandma's knuckles and handing them down to your father and you. Our feelings about photos helps us all feel like family around here. At least I think so. :o)

I should have been simpler, lovely B&W image, I like hands, the soul to one's being

Very nice remembrance Shirley.

My hands are a combination of my Dad, and his mother, my grandma had these huge knuckles and said she did "hand exercises" and would do this thing where she would move all her fingers up and done rapidly , now I Know why,,my knuckles I think have the same need to use it or use it, and pressing on a camera shutter is not exercise enough, oh, I by the way, lovely B &W image, Shirley, hands are what make us different, though some use those more wisely than others

I think one of the most beautiful tasks we have in our lives is to keep the remembrance and the dreams of the beloved people who preceded us. And yes, very often we realize we are much more similar to them than we never thought.
