Summit and descent

Dave and I start from high camp at 4am. Sepp and Guenther start a few minutes before us. We make good progress and reach the crater rim in the 6hrs Alberto had estimated. When we start traversing the rim to the main summit we see Sepp and Guenther descending. Shortly thereafter very strong winds kick up and make it almost impossible to walk. We start traversing below the rim to stay out of the worst of the wind. After reaching the highest point of the rim we see the highest point another 100 meters away and a few meters higher but don't go there in the unrelenting storm. This is followed by a never ending descent from 19,213ft to Refugio Plantat at 10,270ft while picking up gear and weight at every camp.

This was a very exhausting day. Dave considers going home immediately and we try to encourage him to reconsider. The next day we are waiting for hours for the mules to arrive and then descend back to the road. While we celebrate our climb, Dave has made up his mind and will not join us to Aconcagua. 		Dave und ich starten vom Hochlager um 4 Uhr morgens. Sepp und Günther beginnen wenige Minuten vor uns. Wir machen gutes Tempo und erreichen den Kraterrand in den 6 Stunden Alberto geschätzt hatte. Wenn wir anfangen zum Hauptgipfel zu queren sehen wir Sepp und Günther absteigen. Kurz danach beginnen sehr starke Winde und machen es fast unmöglich zu gehen. Wir fangen an unter dem Rand zu queren um den staerksten Wind zu. Nach dem wir den höchsten Punkt des Kraterrandes auf der argentinischen Seite erreichen sehen wir den höchsten Punkt noch 100 Meter entfernt und ein paar Meter höher. Fuer uns war's aber hoch genug in dem unerbittliche Sturm. Dann beginnen wir den endlosen Abstieg von 5850m zum Refugio Plantat auf 3130m während wir in jedem Camp mehr Gewicht aufladen. Das war ein sehr anstrengender Tag und Dave ueberlegt sofort nach Hause abzureisen und wir versuchen, ihn umzustimmen. Am nächsten Tag warten wir stundenlang auf die Maultiere, dann steigen wir zur Straße ab. Während wir unseren Aufstieg feiern, hat Dave seinen Entschluss gefasst und wird nicht mit uns zu Aconcagua weiterreisen.
