Cerro del Plomo

On our tour to Cerro el Plomo our group dwindled down to two. The lift in La Parva was no longer in operation, so the first day approach to Piedra Numerada got additional 2,500ft of ascent before the long traverse over several ridges. Soon it was clear that this would never become a good ski trip. After Piedra Numerada, when finally the angles were more suited for skiing, most of the slopes had already developed 'Penitentes' that made skiing miserable. On the second day we climbed to La Olla at about 13,800ft, where we left the skiers. Above that we followed the trail over scree field to just below the Agostini bivouac where we camped in a somewhat wind protected spot below the ridge (~15,000ft). The night was very stormy and the morning very cold. On the summit day I turned around at about 16,000ft as I was getting too cold and Günther went to the summit alone. Afterwards we moved the camp back to Piedra Numerada and traversed back to La Parva on the fourth day. Bei der Tour zum Cerro el Plomo war unsere Gruppe auf zwei geschrumpft. Die Lifte in La Parva waren nicht mehr in Betrieb wodurch der erste Tag um ca 800m Aufstieg verlängert wurde bevor wir die lange Querung über mehrere Bergrücken nach Piedra Numerada angingen. Dass das keine schöne Skitour werden würde war bald klar. Nach Piedra Numerada, wenn die Hänge die richtigen Neigungen hatten, hatte die Schneeoberfläche meist schon 'Penitentes' geformt, was die Abfahrten miserable machte. Am zweiten Tag stiegen wir zu La Olla auf ca 4200m auf, wo wir die Ski deponierten. Darüber folgten wir dem Weg über Schotterfelder bis fast zum Agostini bivouac wo wir knapp unter dem Rücken an einer etwas windgeschützten Stelle kampierten. (~4600m). Die Nacht war sehr stürmisch und der Morgen sehr kalt. Am Gipfeltag drehte ich zwichen 4800 und 4900m um da es mir zu kalt war und Günther stieg allein zum Gipfel. Danach steigen wir ab und kampierten bei Piedra Numberada bevor wir am vierten Tag zurück nach La Parva querten.
