BC to Camp 1

The first day in base camp is a forced rest day as we have to wait for the medical exam after a day in camp to get permission to continue. We spend all morning with Junin to organize food and loads for high camps. Our plan is to go to camp 1 at 16,000ft the next day, then climb and traverse to camp 3 of the Guanaco route at 18,000ft. There we have running water and can stay longer if we need more acclimation time and then move to Camp Colera at 19,700ft to summit from there. We plan to send porters with a loads of food and gas to the Guanaco camp (10kg) and Camp Colera (13kg). To camp 1 we will carry our own loads. After finishing all preparations Guenther, Sepp and I hike on the big red outcrop above base camp. Junin calls it "Colorado" as it is dramatically red. It is about 15,250ft high and we climb the 1300ft elevation difference up in only about 45 minutes. Acclimation appears good.

The next morning we start the climb for good. We all have a pack of about 45lbs and hike to camp 1 at the usual slow pace that is efficient for the altitude and pack. Once in camp and in the tents it is cold and windy outside and it even snows a bit. 		Der erste Tag im Basislager ist ein erzwungener Ruhetag, da wir auf die ärztliche Untersuchung warten müssen, um die Erlaubnis für den weiteren Aufstieg zu erhalten. Wir verbringen den ganzen Vormittag mit Junin, um Essen und Lasten für die Hochlager zu organisieren. Unser Plan ist es am nächsten Tag bis zum Lager 1 auf 4900m gehen, dann zum Lager 3 der Guanaco Route auf 5500m zu traversieren. Dort haben wir fließendes Wasser und können länger bleiben falls wir mehr Akklimatisierungzeit brauchen. Dann wollen wir zu Camp Colera auf 6000m aufsteigen und von dort zum Gipfel. Wir planen Träger für Lebensmittel und Gas zum Guanaco Lager (10 kg) und Camp Colera (13kg) zu senden. Zum Lager 1 werden wir alle Lasten selber tragen. Nach Abschluss aller Vorbereitungen wandern Günther, Sepp und ; ich auf dem großen roten Hügel oberhalb des Basislagers. Junin nennt das "Colorado"; der ganze berg ist dramatisch rot und etwa 4650m hoch. Wir klettern die 400 m Höhenunterschied in nur etwa 45 Minuten. Akklimatisierung scheint gut.

Am nächsten Morgen beginnen wir den endlich wirklich den Aufstieg. Wir alle haben einen Rucksack von über 20 kg und wandern bis zum Lager 1 mit dem üblichen langsamen Tempo das effizient für die Höhe und die Last ist. Wenn wir im Lager und in den Zelten sind es kalt und windig draußen, und es schneit auch ein wenig.
