This is either a first year male coming into adult plumage or a male late coming out of eclipse plumage. Photo taken this January in Memphis, TN. Note brownish cast to chest and dull green head. The very fine vermiculations on the back show well here, while a Lesser Scaup has much courser mantle markings.
