Most of the body feathers on a Mottled Duck have some interior light marking but some are at the base of the feathers and not seen except when the bird is preening. Black Ducks have narrow edges of a dark chestnut which blend in under most lighting conditions, so the duck's body appears almost all black. The white at the tip of the speculum can sometimes be hard to see as in this photo.
