This is an image of the late afternoon light on one of the windows looking into the Lully Baptist Church which is also know as The Smokemont Baptist Church. The Smoky Mountains are not only about the beautiful mountains and unique weather but it was the land of the Cherokee and later the early settlers. This baptist church was built in 1912 and in use until 1935. It is located in what is now Smoky Mountain National Park adjacent to the Smokemont Campground near the town of Cherokee, North Carolina. The church building is maintained by the park service and is on the National Register Of Historic Places. It stands today as a silent sentinel of the past. I have found it a very peaceful and quiet place and this single window lookin into the past conveys the mood of this place to me.
I would encourage visitors to the Smokies to also explore historic Cades Cove on the Tennessee side of the park for more history regarding the early settlers in this region.
