105mm F/2.5 AIS - 105mm F/2.8 Af-D Micro Compared

I shot these two lenses at all apertures. Here are the important ones. The AIS is very soft wide open (see below!) but tack sharp at F/4, slightly sharper than the Micro in these images. I would be leery of coming to any pixel peeping conclusions based on the F/4 and F/5.6 images from these images; they are so close the difference could be me. Focus was on the "1.5" foot mark on the distance scale.

Note the sharpness of the Micro wide open at F/3.

First image is full frame low res; next 2 are cropped and downsized; the next 6 are 100% resolution crops. Lens ID and exif are included in each image. The subject is a Nikkor 35mm F/1.4 AI.

IMPORTANT NOTE: I shot this test with the stock D200 focusing screen. I recently reshot this test with a Katz Eye focusing screen. My 105 Ai at F/2.5 image is now nearly as sharp as F/4; the differences are subtle, not obvious as per the below image. I hope to get these images supplemented or repalced with my latest iamges.
