The Art of Surfing 1

This image is part of a new photography project I’m working on entitled “The Art of Surfing”. We can all agree that surfing is a sport, but is it also an art form? I think it is and to illustrate that I have approached the project as follows. You see the surfer and the ocean share a connection, an inextricable bond. The energy of the wave propels the rider, and in turn, the rider uses energy to transform the wave into amazing patterns of spray. In the process I believe that the two meld into one artistic form. In order to show this I have processed the images in high contrast black and white to remove the distraction of color and to show how the wave, rider and spray become one in what I believe is a beautiful expression of art.

Over the next few posts I will show you some of my favorite images in the series. This project is pretty different from the typical surf shooting, so I am anxious to hear your impressions about this concept.

what dynamism, and effervescence...that rising spray evokes a sailfish, with the surfer echoing the shape..
