1973 Ferrari Dino 246 GTS,* owned by Michael Tillson (5124)

Named for Enzo Ferrari's son Alfredo, who died at the age of 24, the mid-engine Dino was introduced in 1965 and produced from 1967 through the mid-1970s. Powered by a transversely mounted V6, it was a major departure from the traditional front-engine and V12-powered Ferraris that preceded it. Initially, it was simply called Dino, not Ferrari Dino. But dealers sold it as a Ferrari and literally affixed the famous nameplate to the car to make it more marketable. Over the years, the car has proved its worth and is now generally recognized as a "real" Ferrari. The best examples sell for more than $300,000; average ones go for about $125,000.
