We had a partial solar eclipse this morning (14/11/2012), reaching something like 96.5% of totality where I live.

It was very neat, happened in early morning and the quality of light was amazing. One thing I had never realised
before is that a great many (though not all) of the sun flecks you see on surfaces from sunlight coming through
tree leaves are actually pinhole images of the sun. It becomes very obvious during an eclipse; instead of the
usual confusion of blurry circles, you get a confusion of blurry arcs.

This picture illustrates the effect, taken of my front door when we got back to the house and the eclipse
was well past maximum. The arcs are about 40-60 mm (1.5-2.5 inches) across. They were projected by
a tree that is about 3-4 metres from the front door.
