This gallery features a small selection of my works of art since the 1960's in mediums including: painting on canvas, paper works, collagraphs, ceramic sculpture, and fiber art. These art works are NFS.

As a young artist I made an ink portrait of an elderly man sitting in a café. This was Fredden Goldberg the realist artist, who upon seeing my drawing offered me a scholarship for artist studies with him, which I gratefully accepted. At this time I was also attending art school, in an era of abstract expressionism. While drawing street scenes I had developed a fascination with the interplay between people and birds, which evolved into a sensitive inquiry about human and bird interactions. This led me to explore bird and man relationship in other times, back into greco-roman western traditions. An interest in mythology and mythic dimension of consciousness grew, and along with it a special appreciation of the writings of Joseph Campbell.


In time I began a journey of interpretative free-form drawings, initially inspired by the Icarus myth, which broadened into creative explorations of a personal mythology. In 1967 "Unicorn and I Were One" was published: a limited edition hardcover selection of these drawings. In time I began to look further north and become inspired by the eagle, raven, and owl, and the native myths of the Canadian Pacific North West.


In the mid 1960’s I established and managed The Odyssey Studio Gallery in the university area of Vancouver, Canada, featuring contemporary artists. In 1971 I became a naturalized Canadian. I explored figurative drawing and painting from the classical to the imaginary, from thin pen and ink lines, to sumi ink brushwork. I was also drawn to possibilities of creating new visual means of expression (inspired by Mark Toby) with the intent of accessing subtle mythic dimensions of consciousness.


A Canada Council Grant provided the opportunity to introduce a series of full color serigraphs working with the master printer, Bill Bonniman. In the early 1970’s I traveled to the major art centers of Europe, followed by five months travel in India and Nepal, returning overland through central Asia. When I returned to Vancouver I had imagined carrying on with human mythic figurative imagery. Instead I began work inspired by ancient non-figurative polyrhythms, patterns, and exciting new visual relationships. Tribal carpets, mosaic tile, Mandela’s, and fabric blocks were especially inspiring. I began exploring these newly appreciated rhythms in serigraph one-of-a-kind prints.

In the mid 1970’s I undertook a three-month solo BMW motorcycle journey to view pre-Columbian art, and areas of Oaxaca, Yucatan, and the Guatemalan Highlands, making prisma color pencil studies on route. I also traveled by motorcycle to the American South West and the Navajo Wide Ruins Reservation. Beginning in the mid 1970’s Influences of Tibetan and Navajo weavers inspired a seven-year series one-of-a-kind Wool Works of Art. I was drawn to explore timeless themes, such as the Tree of Life, using wool in tufted form with the notion of creating works of heirloom value. The first pieces in wool took a more stylized direction, while the later pieces evolved to be fluid and painterly. In 1981 fifty-six of these fibre pieces were shown and reviewed at the Move Gallery in Vancouver.

In 1984 I traveled to cultural centers in Asia focusing on Kyoto in Japan, Guilin in China, Kyongju in South Korea, and the Taipei Palace Museum in Taiwan. On return I created a calligraphic- like series of paintings. Beginning with contained ovoid shapes and containing an abundance of energy they in time, burst open like seedpods. This led in the late 1980’s to a series of large dynamic canvas paintings, and the Vancouver Bau-Xi Gallery show, entitled “ the Flow Beneath.”


The abstract canvases that would follow featured tide-pool references. Some of these canvases would take a sculptured appearance as I added ground marble dust to the paint gel. A complementary series of one of a kind 22"x30" seascape colographs were created at the Dundarave Workshop in Vancouver. These colographs were aided by wood blocks that I had carved. Beginning in the mid 1990’s for six years, my wife Linda, and I spent summer months exploring secret bays and shoreline sanctuaries, in an old steel sailboat, along the Canadian West Coast.


I was increasingly inspired to photograph details of the inter-tidal zone, and the surrounding wildlife. In tide pool imagery and the surrounding landscapes I found a rich abundance of inspirations. The immediate feedback and editing potential of digital photography was inspiring to me. I created a three set CD rom slideshow of coastal photographs, followed by one-of-a-kind, three-dimensional clay sculptures of tide-pool seascapes. In 1995 "Musing of an Artist" was published celebrating my reaching a milestone of thirty years creativity. In this limited edition book I explored through playful curiosity, koans and musings, notions of art, nature, and culture. Since the year 2000 I have chosen to direct more attention to outdoor photographic immersions in wilderness areas of Western Canada. This has led to many months of expeditions photographing wildlife and landscapes within B.C., Alberta, The Yukon and the Northwest Territories as far north as the Arctic Circle. I bring an artist understanding from other media, and other decades to my photography as an art form, and find joy outdoors in deeply felt experiences of wild nature.
