LaVeta pass cafe .jpg

The old La Veta pass in Southern Colorado was a winding, picturesque road. It was long ago replaced by a straighter, wider and lower hiway.
But the resturant at the top of the old pass was a favorite place for us. We stopped when we were anywhere near. Two women ran the cafe. They cooked on an old cast Iron coal/wood cook stove.
The ceiling and top of the log walls were stained with the smoke from the stove and the place had that special smell of wood/coal burning stoves.
They made the world's best pies in that old oven (at least we thought they were) These stoves had no tempeture guage. You tested with a pile of flour on a brown paper. Long ago...... LOL
The cafe closed after the road moved. but here from my memory it is back in business.
