At Dargai, just before the Malakand Pass, we stayed at the Malakand Levy post. It was also the courthouse, and we piled all our gear inside against a wall, and slept on the tables. It was the first time our horses ate a Pakistan livestock staple, dry straw and flour, mixed with water. They, who had been raised at the armie's breeding farm had always been used to fresh green food, (and up to this point we had managed to secure green food for them) didn't like it. But fresh green food was not available in the Dargai bazaar. They got used to it. In a month they would be nibbling on tree bark. So would we.
