This picture was taken in the Thar desert three days ride (by camel) from Jaisalmer (near Pakistan border). Nobody had lived in this village for several years. When the rains fail, the crops fail, and the inhabitants pawn their gold and silver jewelery and move away. They leave their fields planted with seeds. When the rains do come, the fields start to grow and the inhabitants return. When they harvest their crops, they buy back their jewelery. The cycle continues.
