Commander Eric Irwin USN (sub captain) and skipper Bob Cornell aboard his & Sue's HALCYON 30C just west of the Race about two hours into the Friday race to Greenport.
"Hi Arthur, Thank you for all of your efforts with this event. It was fun racing. By the way, Eric from my crew is a sub commander and thought the departing subs 5 blasts to be a bit much. In any event, he's going to add the 120 sailboats at the Race scenario to his training exercises. Thanks again, Bob"
"Bob, I talked to the CO of the USS PROVIDENCE, which was the submarine that gave the fleet 5 short blasts at the Race. He said that he was ready to get rid of the Coast Guard escorts at buoy 1/2 but the CG wanted to stay since they knew about the Off Soundings event and all of our sailboats jammed up at Race Rock. If I get a chance, will give him a picture. Eric"
"Arthur, Seeing this email from Eric reminded me that you had asked about 5 blasts you had not heard. Attached is a picture we took. We were north and west of you in GIMLET II 33 when the sub came through and I believe the sail over Eric's right shoulder is MONTROSE 30U. I really wish we got a shot of the USCG guys with the 50 cals buzzing us! Best, Bob"
