In 2006/2007 all of the deck and cabin top mounting hardware holes were "potted". All gear was removed from the deck, the holes drilled over size, core removed, and then filled with thickened epoxy. New holes were drilled for the fasteners and the hardware was re-installed. This has left the decks & cabin top, secure and dry.

Surveyed in 2008. She is in exceptional condition.

The Club was built on property originally owned by Rio Algom which was a division of RTZ, a global mining and smelting conglomerate. The Club opening ribbon was cut by the wife of the Chair of Rio Algom. I still remember her perfect up do.

The Pater Mine, a copper mine, was closed years prior however the entire operation . . . head frame, buildings, ore bins and all . . . still stood on the hill at the NE corner of the club grounds. The Club house was a former staff house originally built on the nearby Pronto uranium mine property.

The marine railway and associated surface rails for boat hauling and storage was all made with material salvaged from shuttered mining properties nearby. With conventional mining practices of the day, there was plenty of 60 lb rail to be found and there were the strong backs of a young membership to lay and spike it.

Building that little yacht club is the closest I've experienced that reflects "pioneering" as one would define it.

Ironically the Club could never build any permanent docks including piers for a travel lift. The mouth of the Serpent River was a log-boom ground for white pine floated down the Serpent. Just west of the Club were the ruins of a late 1800, early 1900 saw mill with a marine and rail lumber load out point. It was a big operation in its day. Rio Algom owned the land to the water's edge and the mineral rights above and below the water line. The water rights and the property submerged to the water line was owned by the McCauley family of that early lumbering fame. The family absolutely refused to give permission for any permanent structure to be built in the water. As I understand, that credo stands to this day.

SEUTE DEERN is old German for Sweet Girl. We were in Hamburg to visit where my folks grew up a few years back and there were a number of local lighters and other assorted commercial utility boats with like or similar names running on the Elbe River. So, the connection was clear.

She was originally launched at Little Current, Manitoulin Island in April of 1984. If you have a copy of the REGISTRY from that period, there was a picture of her transom on the back.

When I bought her, she remained at the North Channel YC. She was sailed exclusively in the North Channel until I sold her to Dennis Grabish. I believe Dennis took her south as far as Cuba and then back north to North Channel YC.

She's a nice boat and certainly well suited for the Great Lakes. I enjoyed her endlessly.

Believe it or not I got a bit bored with weekend distance limitations. Only having the same dozen or so anchorages available to me I wanted a boat with longer legs. Bored of legendary destinations! I know, I should be kicked.

SEUTE DEERN was replaced with a very nimble and portable 17' Boston Whaler Super Sport. Great fun and got to places previously out of reach on a typical outing but limited to day tripping.

Am in Colorado now, so boating has changed a bit. Now with a classic Boston Whaler Montauk that is easily stored in my garage and available at an instant. Admittedly I do like not having dues, yacht club politics AND a boat that can get the full spa treatment in my driveway in a couple of hrs.
