At about the time that most people retire, I was introduced to sailing as crew in the weekly Sarnia Yacht Club/Port Huron Yacht Club competitions.
Having never owned a sailboat before and the fact that my wife Heather felt she would be no more than a timid passenger, it was determined that our purchase of a boat should be one that was 1) comfortable, 2) sailed with less heel 3) a nice ride and 4) could be single-handed well into my senior years. The design of boat that my advisers kept recommending was a Nonsuch.
Found our dream boat at Toronto Outer Harbour Marina. At one time, she had won a Best In-Show award. She had spent her life prior to us on Lake Ontario. She was originally named KODO and owned by a partnership of Kirkwood & Schock. In 1983 she was renamed MISTOFFELEES and became a registered vessel at that time.
Purchased her in 2004 from Dan Peel. Dan had done some major restoration work prior to deciding that he wanted an even larger boat. I was impressed with the work that Dan had done on it and have continued to try & bring it back to it's one time show condition.
Up until now we have been entertaining our non-sailing friends by taking them out for day sails. Regardless of their lack of sailing experience, guests quickly get hands-on training on how to sail a Nonsuch & pictures to share with their family & friends. Sailing adventures on MISTOFFELEES have also been auctioned off by two local charities. Even though we have yet to hit our goal of 100 guest rides in a season our dock mates have asked if we are running a cruise business (we don't).
While some people have told me they consider Nonsuch to be to pricey, I feel that the valuation should be based on how often it is sailed.
Cheers!
