GARDEN BEFORE GARDENS
“Gods, strange Gods, come forth from the forest
into the clearing of my known self and then go back.”
D.H. Lawrence
From ocean to high mountains a primeval world of wet.
A chaos of old growth forest, impenetrable by man.
Land of rain. Land of trees. Land of moss.
Dripping water, dripping lichen, dripping moss.
All leaves, trunks - cedar, fir, yew, maple, dressed in green.
Ferny undergrowth where light sneaks through.
Devil’s club. Salal. Nurse logs. Wild rhodies. ‘Shrooms.
Lungs of the earth.
