DOGWOOD

This might, or might not, be Pacific Dogwood,
but it’s definitely from the Cornus genus
of which Wiki says there are between 30-60 species
(how’s that for specific… 30-60!)

And how did it get the name ‘dog’ wood?
Perhaps from the French ‘dague’ meaning dagger
as the wood is so hard it was used to make meat skewers.

In the background, pink crabapple blossom
(I wonder how crabapple got its name…),
but this is about dogwood flowers.

In early May creamy blossoms float on a strong breeze
like a flock of slow butterflies
drunk on the nectar of early summer light.

They sure are pretty.

So pretty against that background. We don't see dogwoods like this very often around here. Most of them were killed off from a blight several years ago. When I was growing up we had several in our yard like this and I always loved them.

Beautiful capture of this dogwood, and a lovely background, which matches the petals, as well.

Lovely, well lit Dogwood. I were aware of only white which I've seen growing wild in woods and pink in garden nurseries.

What a glorious shot this with the beautiful dogwood blossoms against that pink backdrop. I remember the dogwoods from living out in BC, the blooms are so different from our dogwoods here. V
