DOGWOOD
This might, or might not, be Pacific Dogwood,
but it’s definitely from the Cornus genus
of which Wiki says there are between 30-60 species
(how’s that for specific… 30-60!)
And how did it get the name ‘dog’ wood?
Perhaps from the French ‘dague’ meaning dagger
as the wood is so hard it was used to make meat skewers.
In the background, pink crabapple blossom
(I wonder how crabapple got its name…),
but this is about dogwood flowers.
In early May creamy blossoms float on a strong breeze
like a flock of slow butterflies
drunk on the nectar of early summer light.
