California Gold

Knight's Ferry, California

This is a California Golden Poppy, our state flower, which has gained a foothold in a rock wall in the old Gold Rush town of Knight's Ferry. Originally, there was a mill, and a ferry across the Stanislaus river, as well as a store to buy locally grown beef. The masonry was done by Italian immigrants who didn't find gold, and turned to their old skils to earn a living. The ferry was replaced by a covered bridge, but that is now closed to traffic, and a modern bridge takes it's place. Knight's Ferry has a population of less than 100 people, but they are incredibly friendly.

At any rate, a Golden Poppy from the Gold Country in the Golden State seemed special enough for the monthly theme.
