A long time home to Native Americans, the area was discovered by the French in 1699. The parish lies in an area of rich soil which has provided a strong agricultural base. Timber from the forests in the western part of the parish continued that agricultural economy.
Bayou Plaquemine with it's access to the Mississippi River and the interior of Louisiana became a major waterway until mid 1960 when a new lock was built upriver.
Iberville Parish has come into the 21st century as a major chemical center with it's water, highway, and rail links.
Iberville Parish is home to many Mississippi River plantation homes, including the most famous, Nottaway.
