Evangeline Downs opened in 1966 in Carencro Louisiana. It provided both quarter horse and Thoroughbred racing for fans.

In 1992 video poker machines were introduced to enhance guests gambling experiences. In 1996 Lafayette Parish voters banned video poker in the parish. A decision was made at that time to move the track to nearby St Landry Parish where it now sits.
