St Martin Parish - St Martinville - Evangeline

On the church grounds at St Martin de Tours sits the statue of Emma Labiche.

Her story is part of the Acadian culture. French Catholics came to North America settling in Nova Scotia. In 1750, the British drove them from the province. Families were separated as the group moved south. According to the story, Emma Labiche and her boy friend Gabriel became separated, with her traveling all the way to south Louisiana to St Martinville.
