The girls-only school was opened in 1821 on this 250 acre campus. The campus is located off the beaten path in a very quiet setting as you can see from the photo. The oak trees are massive.
The Sacre'-Coeur Oak Grove.
The oaks served as a shaded path for the Jesuit priests who went back and forth from Academy of the Sacred Heart to St Charles college (for young men) It was believed to be planted in 1840. One can walk through the grove of trees feeling the wind blowing and contemplate who had been there before them.
Of all of the Convents dedicated to the Sacred Heart, this in Grand Coteau holds the record for the longest continuous operation, despite flood, yellow fever epidimic, fire, and the Civil War.
The Academy is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
