Destrehan was built in 1787 and is the oldest documented plantation home in the lower Mississippi River valley. It is listed on the National Register of Historic places.
Throughout it's lifetime Destrehan has suffered many periods. American Oil Company at one time owned the property and had an adjacent oil refinery. The refinery closed in 1959. Destrehan fell into disrepair at that time. There were rumors that the pirate Jean Lafitte had buried treasure in the house and treasure hunters tore the house apart. In 1971 Americal Oil donated the house to the
River Road Historical Society which began to restore the house and surrounding area to its former beauty.
