I don't have an example of the lens in front of me but probably the A and M slider shifts the lens aperture between Automatic and Manual, meaning automatic diaphragm and manual, in manual the iris stops down all the time and in automatic only when you press the shutter release.

how far were u from the cattle? I cant get my same lens to focus. Great photos by the way!! Also - what does the "A" and "M" slider on the lens mean? I assumed it was for manual and autofocus... but because of the age of the lens I didnt think that is what it stood for. Any help on this lens? It is a fabulous looking lens though.
