Eastern Spadefoot Toads

Mating. Amazing to see this during the day. These toads are not seen very often, sometimes burrowing underground for years, only to emerge after heavy rains. They are found mostly in the southern part of the state in sandy soil. On each hind foot there is a sharp black spade used to dig into the soil and bury themselves.

Excellent series of shots on the Eastern Spadefoot Toads. We also have a spadefoot toad here as well, which look a lot more toad-like than these. Well done Bob!
