From 1862 until the early 1900s all transportation to Bannack relied on the use of horses,
mules or oxen to move people and goods. Stagecoach travel was expensive and uncomfortable
and the roads were very poor. The weather could be unbearably hot and dusty, wet and muddy
or freezing cold. Stages were often overloaded and at times the passengers would have to get
out and push the coach through mud and up steep grades.
